About Tennessee State Veterans' Home

Tennessee State Veterans’ Homes were established by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1988, with the first home opening in Murfreesboro in 1991. Subsequent homes were added in Humboldt, Knoxville, Clarksville, and Cleveland, and an additional facility is under construction in Arlington.

These homes provide skilled nursing care, long-term care, and rehabilitative therapy services. They operate independently from the VA but work closely with it to help veterans access federal funding; the system is governed by the Tennessee State Veterans’ Homes Board, whose members are appointed by the Governor.

Oversight of daily operations is managed by the Executive Committee of the Board, which delegates authority to the Executive Director and executive staff. Each facility has an administrator responsible for local day-to-day management; additional executive roles include Clinical Services, Medical Director, Construction, Marketing/Public Relations, and Financial Compliance among others.

The system has a substantial workforce: as of the most recent state audit, the Board operates five homes and employs over 650 staff, 67% of whom are nursing staff and 33% administrative. The facilities have faced high turnover, ranging from 90% at Humboldt to 554% at Murfreesboro, with 73% of departures being voluntary over the review period.
