About Sunrise Senior Living

Sunrise Senior Living was established in 1981 by Paul and Terry Klaassen. The couple opened their first community in Oakton, Virginia, aiming to offer a resident-centered alternative to the typical institutional nursing home, inspired by warm, nurturing elder care models in the Netherlands.

Over the decades, Sunrise has grown to become a sizable provider of senior living, with more than 270 communities in North America serving over 20,000 residents, and supported by a workforce of over 22,000 team members.

Sunrise offers a full continuum of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-term stays, allowing families to find appropriate services under one operator. Its model emphasizes warm, personalized, resident-focused experiences drawn from its original European-inspired philosophy.

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, Sunrise has maintained its original base near where it began in Oakton. The founders remain connected to the company’s mission as trusted advisors. The company is known for its “Monogram Collection,” a selection of independent, full-service communities chosen for their distinctive features.
