About State of Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs

The LDVA is a statewide cabinet-level department established under the Government of Louisiana, with the mission to support veterans and their families through long-term care, benefits coordination, burial honors, education, and other services.

Originally formed as the Louisiana Office of Veterans Affairs in 1944, the agency evolved into a cabinet-level department in 2003 to better serve veterans’ needs through an expanded and centralized organizational structure.

As a state government department, LDVA is publicly operated, funded by state and federal dollars, and accountable to the Governor and the state legislature. It has a formal leadership structure headed by a secretary supported by deputy, undersecretary, and assistant-level positions.

LDVA oversees five veterans homes located in Jackson (Louisiana Veterans Home), Monroe (Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home), Bossier City (Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home), Reserve (Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home), and Jennings (Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home). It also manages veterans cemeteries and numerous service offices across the state.

Its core services include long-term care, rehabilitative and skilled nursing, Alzheimer’s and dementia care, pharmacy services, benefits assistance, educational programs, burial honors, and outreach through parish service offices and campus centers.
