About Smp Health
SMP Health traces its origins to the early 20th century when the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, exiled from France, established healthcare ministries starting in Illinois and later North Dakota. In 1982, the centralized corporate office relocated to Fargo, and in December 2000, the organization formally took on the name “Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Health System” (SMP Health System).
Initially, the Sisters managed all operational aspects of their facilities—from nursing to dietary to administrative tasks. Over time, due to increased complexity and declining religious vocations, lay governance and staffing became essential. In 2015, SMP Health Ministry, a “public juridic person,” was formed to serve as canonical sponsor, preserving the system’s Catholic identity and mission in a modern governance structure.
Today, SMP Health administers hospitals, critical access facilities, home care, and several long-term care/nursing homes across North Dakota (and at least one in Illinois) under its Catholic health ministry sponsorship. Its line of business includes skilled-nursing, assisted living, and related healthcare services.
Corporate structure: SMP Health is a nonprofit corporation governed by SMP Health Ministry, with operational oversight provided by lay leadership rather than religious orders directly.
