About Sanford Health
Sanford Health is a large nonprofit health system headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It serves communities across the upper Midwest—including South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Wyoming, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—and employs 55,000 staff, serving over 2 million patients and nearly 415,000 health-plan members. It claims the title of the largest rural health system in the United States.
The organization began as a small hospital in Sioux Falls. Over time, through organic growth and a major merger, it became a large health system. Specifically, Sanford Health merged with MeritCare Health System in 2009 to form the unified Sanford Health.
Sanford operates a broad continuum of care—from hospitals and outpatient clinics to senior services such as independent living, assisted living, long‑term care, nursing homes, and in‑home care.
The chain is nonprofit and not publicly traded; it is governed by a board of trustees and has executive leadership but has no public equity or REIT affiliations.
