About National Lutheran Communities & Services

National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) is a faith-based, not-for-profit ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Delaware-Maryland, Metropolitan Washington, D.C., and Virginia synods, serving people of all beliefs. It partners with older adults and families through retirement communities, in-home services, and a philanthropic granting program called Impact1890.

NLCS traces its origins to 1890 when it began with a gift of land and a small cottage for seniors; the first National Lutheran Home opened in 1895 in Washington, D.C., later relocating in 1980 to Rockville, Maryland, where it built a 300-bed skilled nursing facility now known as The Village at Rockville. In 2008, the organization formalized as 'National Lutheran Communities & Services' to guide expansion and diversification of its services.

It operates five retirement communities in Maryland and Virginia, along with a home care agency and grantmaking program (Impact1890). Its services encompass independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and in-home care services.

Impact1890, previously known as NLCS Community Impact, has provided grants since 2014 to many organizations supporting underserved older adults across Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. In 2020, it awarded more than $310,000 to numerous nonprofit organizations addressing needs such as social isolation, transportation, memory care, and housing in its service area.
