About Maine Veterans' Home

Maine Veterans’ Homes is a nonprofit senior services healthcare provider, established by the Maine Legislature in 1977 to care for Maine’s veterans and eligible family members. The organization operates independently of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), though it collaborates with the VA to obtain federal benefits for residents and relies on donations to support activities, equipment, and facility enhancements.

MVH opened its first facility in Augusta in 1983, and subsequently expanded to Caribou, Scarborough, South Paris, Bangor, and Machias. The expansion was legislatively mandated to ensure coverage across Maine’s regions.

MVH is governed by a Board of Trustees formally appointed by the Governor of Maine, with the Director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services serving ex officio, and comprised of veterans and community members. The Board is responsible for appointing the Chief Executive Officer who administers the homes and their staff, consistent with policies established by the Board.

MVH operates six facilities across the state: Augusta, Bangor, Caribou, Machias, Scarborough, and South Paris. As of March 2022, the combined facilities were licensed for 628 beds: 450 nursing facility beds and 178 assisted living beds. In Fiscal Year 2024, they served an average daily census of 574 residents and a total of 1,185 over the year, and also operate a pharmacy serving their six homes and 15 external long‑term care facilities.

The organization provides a full continuum of care including long‑term care, short‑term skilled nursing, rehabilitation and therapy, memory and dementia care, residential care, and respite care. Additional services permitted by law include adult day health care, outpatient clinics, and hospice or housing facilities if approved.
