About Kindred Healthcare

Kindred Healthcare was originally founded in 1985 (as Vencor, Inc.) in Louisville, Kentucky, and rebranded as Kindred Healthcare upon emergence from bankruptcy in April 2001.

It is a private company headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky (680 South Fourth Street) and operates across the United States. In 2017-2018, the company divested its skilled-nursing facility business—selling 89 nursing centers in 18 states to a private equity-led buyer. Later, Kindred underwent a significant restructuring: in 2018 it was acquired by a consortium (Humana, TPG, WCAS), splitting into separate home-health and specialty hospital businesses; then in 2021, LifePoint Health completed acquisition, launching ScionHealth, which includes Kindred Hospitals and rehab/behavioral services units.

Today, Kindred is known for operating long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs), inpatient rehabilitation services, and behavioral health services, but it no longer centrally manages skilled-nursing chains under its main corporate structure. However, CMS-affiliated data still identifies four specific SNF-licensed locations affiliated with Kindred Healthcare — located in CA, FL, KY, NC.
