Kendal

Kendal is a not-for-profit organization supporting a network ('Kendal System') of affiliated communities and programs—all grounded in Quaker values such as simplicity, integrity, stewardship, and community. Each affiliate remains locally governed and operated, retaining its own board and identity, while benefiting from shared system-level services and strategic support.

The concept began in the late 1960s by a Quaker-inspired committee seeking a 'better way in retirement.' The first Kendal community opened in 1973, and The Kendal Corporation was formally established in 1989 to support an expanding network of affiliates.

Kendal operates under a federal-model affiliation structure: affiliates are independent 501(c)(3) nonprofits, managed locally, with The Kendal Corporation acting as a supporting organization—providing strategic planning, governance support, shared services, and brand alignment—but not exerting centralized control.

As of 2024, the Kendal System comprises approximately 10 operating affiliates across the U.S., with at least one more in development (Ensó Village in California). Affiliates span states including New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Washington D.C. area, Illinois, and California.

Affiliate offerings vary but typically include independent living, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and continuing-care at-home (Kendal at Home). Kendal at Home, established in 2004, allows members to age in place with care coordination, healthy-aging planning, and lifetime coverage in their own homes.
