Guthrie

Guthrie is a physician-led, not-for-profit integrated health system founded in 1910 by Dr. Donald Guthrie, modeling it after the Mayo Clinic’s group practice approach. Its focus spreads across clinical care, education, research, and long-term care, with roots in a nursing school established in 1901 and a research foundation started in 1942.

Guthrie operates as a non-profit integrated health care network. It includes multiple hospitals (now six), home health, hospice, long-term care, ambulatory and educational services, all under the Guthrie Clinic umbrella.

Guthrie serves areas across nearly 11,000 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York, with six hospital campuses, more than 75 clinics, and approximately 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers handling over 1.5 million patient visits annually.

Beyond acute hospital care, Guthrie delivers long-term care through skilled nursing units. For example, the Towanda campus includes both a skilled nursing unit and a 94-bed personal care home, and the Cortland Medical Center has an attached 80-bed residential care facility. They also provide home health and hospice services.

Guthrie’s growth has been steady: across decades it acquired Troy Community Hospital (1985), Corning Hospital (1999), Towanda Memorial Hospital (2015), Cortland Medical Center (2019), and Lourdes Hospital (2024).
