About Good Samaritan Society
Good Samaritan Society began as a Christian, charitable organization with roots in North Dakota. It was incorporated in 1922 by the Rev. August “Dad” Hoeger and opened its first center—a rented six-room house in Arthur, North Dakota—in March 1923.
During the Great Depression, the organization faced serious financial challenges that ultimately led to a 1940 reorganization; by 1952, it had rebuilt and was operating centers across seven states.
In 2019, Good Samaritan Society officially joined Sanford Health, one of the nation’s largest rural healthcare systems, aligning its senior living and services with a broader healthcare network.
Today, the organization is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is recognized as the largest not-for-profit provider of senior housing and services in the U.S. It remains affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and employs over 24,000 staff.
Its services span senior housing, long-term and skilled nursing care, rehabilitation therapy, and home-based services. It holds a national footprint with approximately 92 nursing facilities across ten states as of mid-2026.
