Ecumen

Ecumen is a nonprofit, faith‑based senior living and care services provider with roots in the Lutheran Conference Relief Program beginning in 1862. Its name, “Ecumen,” derives from the Greek word for “home,” reflecting its longstanding mission to create caring, home‑like environments for older adults.

Historically, Ecumen evolved from early relief and orphanage efforts (e.g., Vasa Children’s Home in 1865) into building senior communities in Mankato, Duluth, and Detroit Lakes by 1900. Hospice services began in 1989, and a renaming to Ecumen occurred in 2004. The organization also pioneered the “Awakenings™” dementia care program in around 2010.

Ecumen is headquartered in Shoreview, Minnesota, and operates across Minnesota and in neighboring states. It provides a range of housing choices and services—including skilled nursing, home care, hospice, therapy, adult day, and memory care—through multiple communities and in‑home offerings.

Ecumen operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. As of end‑2020, it included over 1,715 market‑rate housing units and 298 skilled nursing beds, and it provides development, management, and consulting services in multiple states.

Its lines of business span a full continuum of senior services: from independent living and affordable housing to assisted living, memory care, long‑term skilled nursing, short‑term rehabilitative care, home and hospice services, adult day programs, and ancillary therapy offerings.
