About Brookdale Senior Living

Brookdale Senior Living is a public, Delaware‐incorporated company (NYSE: BKD) that operates a wide range of senior living services—from independent and assisted living to memory care, skilled nursing, CCRCs, and at‑home care programs—across the United States. They emphasize a full continuum of care and support tailored by care level.

The company was originally formed in June 2005 via merger of Brookdale Living Communities, Inc. and Alterra Healthcare Corporation, although the predecessor companies operated since the 1980s. Brookdale traces industry roots back to those entities beginning in 1981 and 1986. The brand “Brookdale” itself is noted to have been founded in 1978.

Brookdale is a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BKD. It has transitioned over the past decade from primarily managing communities under third-party contracts to directly owning a larger proportion of its portfolio, recently completing a $1.8 billion acquisition of CNL Healthcare Properties and shrinking its management contract portfolio to only seven communities by mid‑2026.

As of May 31, 2026, Brookdale operates over 500 retirement communities across 41 states, serving approximately 46,000 residents. It continues to offer a full range of services including skilled nursing and operates CCRCs combining multiple levels of care on shared campuses.

Brookdale is known for offering a comprehensive continuum of senior care services, including independent and assisted living, memory care under programs like Clare Bridge (for dementia), skilled nursing with 24/7 licensed care and on-site therapy, CCRCs, and its Brookdale at Home in-home care services.
