About Avera Health

Avera Health is a nonprofit integrated health system founded in 1897, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It operates extensively across the upper Midwest, serving a geographic area over 72,000 square miles and a population approaching one million across more than 100 communities in five states.

The system includes Avera Medical Group, composed of physicians and advanced practice providers serving patients at nearly 200 locations across its regional footprint. Its service lines span around 60 specialties, covering areas such as behavioral health, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, pediatrics, and many more.

Avera’s telehealth initiative, Avera eCare, originated in 1993 with remote consultations, expanding to support care in hospitals and clinics across eight states, and serving more than 200 hospitals and clinics via ICU, emergency, specialty consults, long-term care, and more. In addition, Avera Health operates senior-care services, including skilled-nursing facilities; CMS data confirms affiliation with 13 such facilities across Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Financially, Avera Health is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established around 1992 (tax-exempt since July 1993), with revenue of approximately $278 million and expenses slightly higher at about $280 million for fiscal year ending June 2024, yielding a net asset base of around $338 million.
