Ascentria Care Alliance originated in 1872 from the Martin Luther Orphan’s Home at Brook Farm in West Roxbury, initially aiding 'aged, weak, and helpless persons' and children. It evolved into Lutheran Social Services of New England and now operates as Ascentria Care Alliance.

It is organized as a nonprofit social services organization, headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was founded in 1872. The organization employs between 1,001 and 5,000 employees and generates over $21 million in annual revenue, largely from program service revenue.

Ascentria operates a range of social and community service programs across New England, such as foster care, refugee resettlement, in-home care, immigration legal assistance, education, and mental health. Its affiliated nursing facilities constitute just one part of its broader services.

In 2025–2026, Ascentria undertook a major expansion of its headquarters, relocating to a new 24,615-square-foot facility in downtown Worcester named 'The Lighthouse at Ascentria.' This space enhances collaboration, accommodates higher client and staff engagement, and improves access to programs and partners under one roof.
