Asbury Communities

Asbury Communities traces its origins to 1926, when it was founded as a Methodist home for the aged in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Over decades, its scope expanded beyond that initial community to a network of CCRCs and integrated aging services.

Organized formally in 1994 as a Maryland nonprofit (Asbury Communities, Inc.), the parent entity provides strategic, managerial, and administrative support to affiliated organizations across multiple states. It also maintains the Asbury Foundation for benevolent care and owns ThriveWell Tech (formerly TAG IT), its for‑profit technology and consulting subsidiary.

Asbury Communities operates in multiple states—most notably Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee—and serves thousands of older adults through residential communities and allied services like pharmacies, PACE/LIFE programs, rehabilitative services, and home care via affiliated organizations like Albright Care Services.

Its service lines now include independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, pharmacy, IT consulting (via ThriveWell Tech), home services, and PACE programs through affiliated LIFE centers. Its faith-based heritage continues to inform operations, though the organization is no longer formally affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

By expanding via affiliations—most notably with Albright Care Services in 2019—Asbury has grown both in geographic reach and in diversity of service offerings, reflecting its evolution from a single retirement village to a diversified aging services provider.
